Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said the “frozen” political dialogue between the European Union and Georgia stands as the “biggest problem” to Armenia’s path toward EU integration, during a March 11 address to the European Parliament.
“The biggest problem on Armenia’s EU integration path at the moment is the frozen state of the political dialogue between the EU and Georgia,” Pashinyan told MEPs, adding that Armenia looks at Georgia as a “path” to the European Union.
“Georgia is for us a path to the European Union, and we adopted a law on launching the process of Armenia’s EU accession after Georgia was granted candidate status for European Union membership,” he said.
“It made Armenia’s EU membership prospect tangible, and we expect, and we request that the constructive process between the European Union and Georgia develop,” he said. “This is as important for Armenia as it is for Georgia.”
The remarks came a week after Pashinyan and members of his cabinet visited Georgia on March 3 to 4, meeting with Georgian Dream officials, including in the format of the Georgia-Armenia Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation.
During his address to the European Parliament, Pashinyan also discussed Armenia’s recent peace agreement with Azerbaijan, ongoing domestic reforms, regional connectivity projects, and Armenia’s prospects for EU membership.
Yerevan has increasingly sought closer cooperation with the EU in recent years, while Tbilisi’s ties with Brussels have hit a historic low, amid growing criticism of the Georgian Dream government’s anti-democratic and anti-European policies.
In its November 2025 Enlargement Report, the European Commission described Georgia as a candidate country “in name only.” The EU recently suspended the visa-free regime for Georgia’s diplomatic and official passport holders under a new mechanism.
