On March 25, 2026, Ukrainian forces (AFU) conducted a long-range drone strike on Russia’s Vyborg Shipyard in Leningrad Oblast (near the Finnish border, about 1,000 km from Ukrainian territory), damaging the Project 23550 patrol icebreaker Purga.

Imagery shows a severe port-side list (estimated 30–40°) indicating it took on water after a hull breach and can be seen leaning against the nearby Project 22011 research vessel Vice-Admiral Burilichev.

Damage to a vessel of this size at or below the waterline by a UAV is virtually impossible given that the waterline was obscured by the pier along its starboard side and the Burilichev along its port side.

This leaves at least three alternative causes for the damage: sabotage, limpet | magnetic mines, or an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV).

The Purga is as a dual-role armed icebreaking patrol ship under construction for Russia’s FSB Border Guard/Coast Guard.

Designed for Arctic operations, ice up to 1.7m thick, patrol, SAR, towing , and potentially armed with Kalibr missiles, a helicopter, and a 76mm deck gun.
