The missing F-15E Weapons System Officer, identified as a colonel, has been extracted from Iranian territory after nearly 48 hours behind enemy lines.
After ejecting over southwest Iran early Friday, the WSO climbed several thousand feet into mountain terrain and remained concealed in a ridge crevice while U.S. and Iranian forces searched the area.
CIA assets located the hidden colonel and passed coordinates to CENTCOM and the White House.
The CIA then ran a deception operation inside Iran, feeding false intelligence that U.S. personnel were already moving the airman on the ground.
While Iranian forces repositioned in response, dozens of aircraft and hundreds of personnel from multiple service branches executed the mission.
Israel coordinated air suppression to hold Iranian strikes away from the rescue corridor while the operation was underway
At least one aircraft, possibly a C-130, became stuck and was destroyed on-site to prevent capture. No U.S. personnel were killed.
This is the first time since 2003 that a U.S. warplane has been shot down over enemy territory.
