The leaders of #Armenia and #Azerbaijan made an extremely rational and prudent decision by halting wars and launching a process of peacebuilding. Refusing President #Trump’s mediation – whether in initialing an agreement or in agreeing on the details of the “Trump Corridor” project – would have been a very serious mistake on Azerbaijan’s part.
Azerbaijan made the right choice, and August 8 took place. This will lead to the restoration of relations with the United States and an upgrade of strategic partnership for Azerbaijan.
If Azerbaijan were to oppose the agreements between Armenia and the #USA regarding the “Trump Corridor,” and if it were to obstruct in the near future the process of unblocking based on Armenia’s sovereignty, that too would be a very serious mistake. I do not believe that Armenia or Azerbaijan are countries that have the resources to go against the interests of today’s #UnitedStates.
The current geopolitical logic suggests that those states that cooperate with President Trump are the ones that benefit, while those that become a problem for the Trump administration suffer losses.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have decided not to become a problem for the Trump administration, which guarantees us protection from sanctions and harsh American blows. On the contrary, the implementation of major economic and communications projects with the current U.S. administration fundamentally changes the role of Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Our countries are becoming key links in trade routes connecting Asia and Europe. This increases the role of our region, which has a real chance to stop being a theater of wars and conflicts and to become a region of investment and economic prosperity.
The contribution and personal efforts of President Aliyev and Prime Minister Pashinyan are very important in bringing this process to fruition. After thirty years of wars, Armenian-Azerbaijani cooperation is the only viable solution at this moment.
The visit of Vice President J.D. Vance to Armenia and Azerbaijan underscores the seriousness of the current administration’s intentions toward the South Caucasus.
But let us also be realistic. We still do not trust each other and we have wounds that continue to cause pain today, such as the presence of Armenian prisoners in Baku’s prisons. This circumstance deals a very serious blow to peace.
Every time there is an attempt to explain and convince the public that we are dealing with a peace process, an objective question arises: how is it possible to live in peace when there are prisoners in Baku’s prisons? This is indeed a serious problem, and its resolution would significantly increase confidence in the peacebuilding process among Armenian society.
At the same time, the Armenian government must send positive messages to Azerbaijani society in order to dispel its concerns related to the actually unfounded term “Armenian revanchism.” I am confident that the Armenian government and people have no desire to start a war for the “liberation of Karabakh” or for any other “punitive” goals.
The Azerbaijani government should continue to take positive steps by releasing Armenian prisoners. This would only contribute to overcoming hostility and permanently closing the page of conflict between our countries and peoples.
There should be no more victims. And the ones who decide and implement this are us. Only us.
