President Donald Trump said recent U.S. diplomacy with Iran has been “very good talks,” claiming Tehran “wants to make a deal very badly.”
“The one thing, right up front – no nuclear weapons,” Trump said, adding: “If we could’ve made that deal two years ago, we would’ve made that deal. They weren’t willing to do that. Now they are willing to do that. They’re willing to do much more than they would have a year ago.”
Trump said Washington’s core demand is preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons, and signaled that resolving the nuclear file alone would be sufficient. Earlier U.S. demands had included Iran’s missile program and support for regional allies.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi separately confirmed that the talks in Oman were “exclusively nuclear.”
“The results could surprise people,” Trump said. “If they would’ve offered this deal when we first started, it would’ve been accepted immediately. So we’ll see what happens.” He added that further high-level talks are set for early next week.
The diplomacy is unfolding alongside a major U.S. military buildup in the Gulf, with Trump saying a “big armada” and “big fleet” are moving into the region. He also signed an executive order threatening a 25% tariff on any country continuing to do business with Iran, sharply escalating economic pressure.
