Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did inform U.S. President Donald J. Trump last Tuesday morning that Israel planned to attack Hamas leaders in Qatar, shortly before the strike took place, according to three Israeli officials with direct knowledge that spoke with Axios.
Since the strike, the White House has claimed it was notified only after missiles were in the air, giving President Trump no opportunity to oppose the strike against Qatar. The version of events officials laid out last week was that the U.S. Space Force saw Israeli fighter jets in the air and sought an explanation from Israel, which did not arrive until air-launched ballistic missiles were already flying over Saudi Arabia toward the Hamas compound in Doha.
But according to Israeli officials, Trump was notified prior to the strikes, with officials telling Axios that Netanyahu called Trump about the impending strike around 8:00am EDT, roughly an hour before the strike occurred, as the first reports of explosions in Doha came at around 8:51am. “Trump knew about the strike before the missiles were launched. First there was a discussion on the political level between Netanyahu and Trump, and afterwards through military channels. Trump didn’t say no,” a senior Israeli official claimed. A second senior official said the U.S. was notified “well in advance” on a political level. “If Trump had wanted to stop it, he could have. In practice, he didn’t.”
However, speaking from the Oval Office earlier tonight, President Trump once again denied having any knowledge about the strike against Qatar prior to it taking place, stating that he found out about the strike “the same way you did” when asked by reporters about a possible pre-notification by Israel. Both U.S. and Qatari officials have since stated that today’s statements from officials within the Israeli Government, seemingly out of nowhere, may be an attempt by Israel to draw a divide between the United States and its other allies in the Middle East.
