A shooting incident in midtown Manhattan left an NYPD officer and three other victims dead.
The gunman, Shane Tamura, was also found dead at the scene.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Tamura had a “documented mental health history.”
A shooting at 345 Park Avenue on Monday evening left four victims, including an NYPD officer, dead. The gunman, 27-year-old Shane Tamura, was also found dead at the scene.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch gave a timeline of how the shooting unfolded at the office tower during a press conference on Monday night.
6:28 p.m.: 911 calls start coming in
Tisch said 911 call centers began receiving calls about an active shooter inside 345 Park Avenue at 6:28 p.m.
Tisch said surveillance video showed Tamura disembarking from a double-parked BMW on Park Avenue between 51st and 52nd Streets. Tamura was carrying an M4 rifle in his right hand as he walked to the building’s entrance, she added.
“The building’s security camera footage shows the shooter enter the lobby, turn right, and immediately open fire on an NYPD officer. He then shoots a woman who took cover behind a pillar and proceeds through the lobby, spraying it with gunfire,” Tisch told reporters.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams said at the same press conference that the NYPD officer who died in the shooting was Didarul Islam, 36. Islam served in the NYC’s 47th precinct and was an immigrant from Bangladesh. He leaves behind his pregnant wife and two children.
Tisch said Tamura then proceeded to the building’s elevator bank, where he shot a security guard who was taking cover behind the security desk. Another man was shot in the lobby, Tisch said, citing a statement given by the individual after he was taken to the hospital.
The shooter opens fire in Rudin Management’s office
“The shooter then calls the elevator, which opens in the lobby. A female exits the elevator, and he allows her to walk past him unharmed. He goes up to the 33rd floor, which is Rudin Management, and begins to walk the floor firing rounds,” Tisch said.
Rudin Management is a real estate company that owns 345 Park Avenue. The building’s tenants include Blackstone, KPMG, and the NFL headquarters.
“As he traveled, one person was struck and killed on that floor. He then proceeds down a hallway and shoots himself in the chest,” Tisch said of Tamura’s final moments.
Four people — Islam and three civilians — were killed in the attack. A fifth victim was in critical condition at press time.
Tisch said that four other victims were receiving treatment for “minor injuries” they had sustained while trying to flee the scene.
Shooter’s double-parked BMW searched, firearm found
Tamura told reporters on Monday that the double-parked BMW was registered to Tamura. When officers searched the vehicle, they found a rifle case with rounds, a loaded revolver, ammunition, magazines, a backpack, and medication prescribed to Tamura. The bomb squad said the vehicle was found to be clear of explosives.
Tamura had driven through Colorado on July 26, then Nebraska and Iowa on July 27, and in Columbia, New Jersey, “as recently as 4:24 p.m.” on July 28 before arriving in New York City, Tisch continued.
“According to our law enforcement partners in Las Vegas, Mr. Tamura has a documented mental health history. His motives are still under investigation, and we are working to understand why he targeted this particular location,” Tisch said.
Chris Raia, the assistant director in charge of the FBI’s New York field office, said on Monday that FBI agents were immediately deployed to the scene. The shooting “remains an NYPD investigation,” Raia said.
“Initial checks of our internal systems have not revealed any information about the subject. But when and if more information becomes available, we will share what we can, when we can, with the public,” he said.
