More than 31 million customer email addresses exposed following Neiman Marcus data breach

The recent data breach suffered by the American luxury department store chain Neiman Marcus has exposed more than 31 million customer email addresses.

In May 2024, the American luxury retailer and department store chain Neiman Marcus disclosed a data breach following the security breach of the cloud-based data warehousing company Snowflake.

The luxury retailer disclosed the data breach after threat actors attempted to sell the company’s data for $150K.

The threat actors, called “Sp1d3r,” claimed that stolen data included names, addresses, phones, DOBs, emails, the last 4 of SSN, and much more. The company database offered for sale also includes:

  • 70M transactions (with full customer details, last 4 of SSN, and more).
  • 50M customer emails and IP addresses tracking.
  • 12M gift card numbers (with name, gift card number, balances, and more).
  • 6 billion rows of customer shopping records, employee data, store information.

According to a data breach notification filed with the Office of the Maine Attorney General, the security breach impacted 64,472 individuals.

“We are writing to notify you of an issue that involves certain of your personal information. In May 2024, we learned that, between April and May 2024, an unauthorized third party gained access to a database platform used by Neiman Marcus Group.” reads the notification. “Based on our investigation, the unauthorized third party obtained certain personal information stored in the database platform. The types of personal information affected varied by individual, and included information such as name, contact information, date of birth, and Neiman Marcus or Bergdorf Goodman gift card number(s) (without gift card PINs).”

However, the popular cyber security expert Troy Hunt, who runs the data breach notification platform Have I Been Pwned, told BleepingComputer that the data breach suffered by the American luxury retailer exposed more than 31 million customer email addresses.

A joint investigation by SnowFlake, Mandiant, and CrowdStrike attributes the supply attack to the financially motivated threat actor UNC5537.

According to Mandiant, the attackers used stolen customer credentials to target at least 165 organizations, including TicketMaster and Ticketek.

Hunt also confirmed that the data included in the database appears to be legitimate.

‘He Can’t Win’: House Democrats Shell-Shocked After Caucus Meeting on Joe Biden

House Democrats filed out of Tuesday morning’s closed-door caucus meeting about President Joe Biden’s fitness for office with grim faces and even grimmer thoughts.

“It felt like a funeral,” one Democrat who attended the meeting told Punchbowl News.

“The morale of the caucus is at historic lows,” another Democratic member said, according to Semafor, adding that comparing the meeting to a funeral “is an insult to funerals.”

The 45-minute meeting—organized by House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries (D., N.Y.)—comes with just four months remaining until the November election and as Democrats continue to lose ground in polls amid the aftermath of Biden’s disastrous debate performance against former president Donald Trump, which forced the topic of Biden’s mental fitness to the front of the national discussion.

Congressional Democrats met to discuss their strategy moving forward, an attempt to unify a party that has been fractured in the weeks following the June debate, with some members explicitly calling for Biden to step aside, others declaring utmost loyalty to the president, and many more choosing to remain silent on the question. But the meeting, at first glance, appeared to fail in that unifying objective.

“[We’re] not even in the same book,” Rep. Steve Cohen (D., Tenn.) told reporters following the meeting when asked if the caucus was on the same page.

Cohen later told Axios that multiple members voiced support for Biden withdrawing from the presidential election. One such member appeared to be Rep. Mike Quigley (D., Ill.).

“He just has to step down,” Quigley said of Biden. “He can’t win and my colleagues need to recognize that.”

“[It’s sad] talking about someone you love who is in obvious decline,” another Democrat said, CNN reported, characterizing the prevailing mood of the meeting as “sadness.” The member echoed what Cohen said, saying there were fellow members who spoke in support of Biden stepping aside.

During the meeting, Democrats were briefed on data showing that they could potentially lose up to 20 seats in the House, according to Bulwark reporter Marc Caputo. A Democratic source told Caputo that the party was “supposed to win the House.”

Jeffries didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. The Democratic leader departed the meeting Tuesday through a back exit, avoiding questions from the press.

The White House also didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Overall, poll after poll continues to show Biden trailing Trump with the gap appearing to widen with each passing day. The numbers have alarmed Democrats who have expressed concern about their impact on down-ballot and closely contested local races.

Still, Biden has remained defiant and has aggressively pushed back on calls for him to withdraw from the race.

“The question of how to move forward has been well-aired for over a week now. And it’s time for it to end,” he wrote in a letter to Democrats on Monday morning. “We have one job. And that is to beat Donald Trump. We have 42 days to the Democratic Convention and 119 days to the general election.”

“Any weakening of resolve or lack of clarity about the task ahead only helps Trump and hurts us. It is time to come together, move forward as a unified party, and defeat Donald Trump.”

Andrew Cuomo Slams Alvin Bragg for Letting Columbia Protesters Walk

Former New York governor Andrew Cuomo (D.) on Monday slammed Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg for dropping charges against dozens of anti-Israel protesters involved in the violent takeover of Columbia University’s Hamilton Hall.

“By dismissing 31 of the 46 cases against protesters who briefly occupied Columbia University’s Hamilton Hall in April, [Bragg] has done a disservice to the residents of New York City,” Cuomo wrote in an op-ed for Forward, arguing that New Yorkers “deserve a justice system that is willing to pursue cases even when they are difficult—and, dare I say it, may not align with the ideology of the prosecutor.”

Bragg dismissed the trespassing charges on June 20, citing a lack of direct evidence as the protesters wore masks and would be difficult to identify. New York City police—called in by Columbia president Minouche Shafik after a week of protests—arrested more than 100 participants who broke into Hamilton Hall on April 30.

Cuomo accused Bragg of using masks as an “excuse” to not prosecute properly, noting that the Justice Department had no trouble prosecuting the Jan. 6 rioters who wore masks.

“By letting the cases lapse,” the former governor said, “Bragg’s office has sent the message at this time of increased anti-Semitic activity that those looking to instill fear in Jews by creating chaos and destruction can do so with reckless abandon.”

“[Bragg’s office has] given the impression that certain crimes are not worthy of prosecuting and that certain groups are not worthy of protecting,” Cuomo continued. “As a serious secondary consequence, Bragg’s decision is likely to further dishearten the majority of New Yorkers who believe that the criminal justice system has been politicized.”
