AI-based prison concept would complete sentences in just minutes

(NewsNation) — A new prison concept would have criminals serve entire sentences in just a few minutes.

But it wouldn’t feel like minutes to them. Using the Cognify method, incarcerated people would be hooked up to machines and their brains flooded with artificial memories for what feels like years, effectively forcing them to relive what victims might have gone through.

According to Dubai-based project lead Hashem Al-Ghaili, a biotechnologist and science communicator, the subjects would have the choice between a 10-year prison sentence or AI-generated memory implants.

“Synthetic memories are customized depending on the crime committed and the unique brain structure and psychological profile of the individual,” Al-Ghaili told MSN.

His so-called “prison of the future” could be used on those who committed crimes like domestic violence, hate crimes, embezzlement, theft, discrimination and more. Each offender’s history would be taken into account when generating their artificial memories.

“Violent offenders could experience memories that are designed to trigger empathy and remorse, seeing their crime from the perspective of their victim and feeling their pain and suffering firsthand,” Al-Ghaili said.

“The Cognify concept could revolutionize the criminal justice system by significantly reducing the need for long-term incarceration and its associated costs,” Al-Ghaili said.

After experiencing the artificial memories and undergoing rehabilitation “therapy” via AI, Al-Ghaili said convicts would be able to rejoin society in days rather than years.

Moral concerns about the method include those who are wrongly accused and convicted being forced to relive trauma they never induced, as well as the potential malicious misuse of artificial memory implantation.

U.S. Marshals find 200 missing children in 6-week operation

(NewsNation) — Forty years ago, Ofelia Flores survived the horrors of human trafficking as a minor but was treated as a criminal rather than a victim. Now, the U.S. Marshals are on a mission to prevent other young people from experiencing the trauma of sex trafficking, drugs or a life of crime.

The U.S. Marshals estimate there are currently hundreds of thousands of missing children across the country who could soon become victims.

In early May, marshals and local law enforcement agencies launched a recovery mission for a missing 17-year-old in North Carolina as part of Operation We Will Find You. This was the second nationwide operation of its kind.

During the search, they knocked on hundreds of doors across seven cities over six weeks. Authorities didn’t end up finding the teen they were looking for, but they didn’t give up.

Over the course of the mission, U.S. Marshals found 200 children, removing 123 of them from dangerous situations and locating 77 children safe across seven states.

“This should be a priority for the country,” U.S. Marshal Service Director Ronald Davis said. “Some of them are runaways, some of them now are going to be victims of trafficking and prostitution, and we have an obligation to try to find them.”

Watch Live: President Biden to address SCOTUS immunity decision

(NewsNation) — President Joe Biden is set to speak on the Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision granting presidents immunity for official actions at 7:45 p.m. ET.

The decision was met with backlash from the left, with Democratic U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York announcing she intends to file articles of impeachment against the court after its ruling.

Monday’s ruling will not stop the case against former President Donald Trump altogether but will delay it. The lower court will have to determine whether Trump’s actions on Jan. 6 were considered official presidential duties, making them immune from prosecution.

On Truth Social, the Trump campaign posted that they considered the ruling a win for the former president.
