Donald Trump’s lunatic fringe

Since Donald Trump made that calamitous trip down the escalator so many years ago, we’ve been at war—at war against evil. Throughout these long — ever so long — years, the GOP has had more opportunities than is possible to count, to repudiate the evil, to shut it down, to send it into the good night, into exile where it belongs.

Instead, Republicans have taken a match to this evil, set it ablaze, and launched this firecracker into into America.

They have shown themselves to be:

cowards

corrupt

incompetent

Unable to lead, to govern, to do ANYTHING that does not require first getting Donald Trump’s approval.

At times like this, one finds out who has courage and who does not.

But as disturbing as all of this is, what’s happening NOW is even more troubling.

Allow me to elaborate.

Republicans are no longer merely taking orders from the convicted felon; they’re trying to emulate him.

Cases in point:

Florida Republican Byron Donalds over the weekend accused President Biden of spying on the American people.

If THAT doesn’t sound paranoid enough to you, try this on for size.

Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna wants Congress to vote on whether to have the Sergeant of arms arrest Merrick Garland for not giving them the tape of President Biden’s interview with the special prosecutor..

There are so many more examples I could give. The point is Republicans have given up EVEN THE PRETENSE of working for the American people. They now all sound — they all sound — frankly — delusional. Paranoid. It’s like they should be in straight jackets. I’m not kidding.

. . .

It is impossible to believe that this party markets itself as being for the people. They have not only drank the Cool-aid, but the it’s been fully digested, and they’re going for seconds—and thirds. Never has the GOP appeared weaker (and weirder) than how they appear now. They are not a party. They are the lunatic fringe — literally.

Rachel Morin murder: Suspect awaiting extradition to Maryland

(NewsNation) — Police arrested Victor Martinez Hernandez for the murder of Maryland mother Rachel Morin nearly a year after her body was found on a popular hiking trail. He has since been connected to multiple brutal attacks in different states.

Hernandez was found and arrested in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but he is also accused of a murder in El Salvador and a home invasion and the assault of a nine-year-old girl and her mother in Los Angeles in early 2023.

Authorities on Monday announced Hernandez has waived extradition in Oklahoma, meaning he will be brought to Maryland to face charges, possibly within the next 10 days.

Morin, 37, was reported missing in August 2023 by her boyfriend, who said she never returned after going out for a run. Her body was found on a trail the following day.

DNA taken from the Rachel Morin crime scene had been linked to the unidentified suspect in a Los Angeles home invasion, Colonel William Davis of the Harford County Sheriff’s Office announced soon after Morin’s brutal rape and murder.

The arrest was the result of a multi-agency investigation that faced roadblocks as Hernandez doesn’t have a driver’s license, passport, or birth certificate in the U.S. Because he entered the U.S. illegally, there are no records of him.

NewsNation has learned that a tip was called in, which led investigators to a location where Hernandez was believed to have been recently. The DNA found on some of the belongings at the scene is believed to have matched unknown DNA in the system from a past crime scene.

Morin’s loved ones say they are relieved Hernandez will face charges in Maryland first, before facing charges in any of the other cases he has been linked to.

“He’s just a horrible person that needs to never set foot into a free world. Again, he needs to be behind bars his whole life and I want him to live a very long life and hate every single second of that long life,” Matthew McMahon, the father of Morin’s older daughter, told NewsNation.

Hernandez will be brought to a maximum security facility that holds about 300 other inmates.

The case drew national attention after the suspect’s immigration status was made public. NewsNation learned Hernandez crossed over the southern border multiple times, and it appears that he came in through the El Paso Sector in Texas.

As the investigation continues, questions remain about how and why Hernandez was able to enter the U.S. despite his criminal history, how long he has been on the loose and whether he committed any other crimes.

No, the US didn’t bring back the draft. Here’s what happened

(NewsNation) — Social media posts claiming the United States has reinstated the draft are false, possible misinterpretations of a suggested change to the nation’s Selective Service System.

The U.S. House of Representatives Friday passed a measure within the National Defense Authorization Act that would automatically enroll men 18-26 with the Selective Service System.

The federal agency documents all people registered for Selective Service, many mandatorily. The agency would provide that information to the Defense Department in case of a draft, although one is not currently in place.

A draft hasn’t been instituted in the country since 1973 — and enlisting in the service is voluntary.

Men 18-25 are already required by law to register for Selective Service. As the law is written now, anyone who is required to register and fails to do so could be charged with a felony punishable by as many as five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000, according to the agency’s website.

Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, D-Pa., sponsored the language. She said in May it would make any potential future military draft fair and would save money on education and advertising campaigns currently geared at driving people to register.

2024 has the smallest active-duty force since 1940.

Findings from a Pew Research Center report suggest only 23% of young people qualify for the military, and a majority of Americans aged 18 to 29 have a negative view of the armed forces altogether.
