A woman who made hundreds of threatening phone calls to the Tree of Life synagogue and its executive director was sentenced Thursday to 32 months in prison and three years of supervised release, closing a saga that began just months after 11 congregants were killed there in an antisemitic attack.

Melanie Harris, 59, made her first phone call to the synagogue and its executive director, Joel Goldstein, in February 2019. In various voicemails left over the next few years, she referenced victims of the October 2018 massacre, used antisemitic slurs and said, “I’ll cut your f—ing head off.”

Harris was arrested in March 2023 in Riverside, California, and pleaded guilty to knowingly and intentionally transmitting a threatening communication in interstate commerce.

The Tree of Life synagogue did not respond to a request for comment.

After serving Tree of Life for more than 20 years, Goldstein left the position and moved with his family to Florida, but the calls continued. Harris called him more than 240 times in total, according to the plea agreement, including one day in October 2022 in which she left Goldstein 15 voicemails.

Goldstein raised his concerns with the ADL’s South Florida office, which forwarded them to the FBI, leading to Harris’ arrest. She pleaded guilty in October 2023.

“The nature of her threats of violence towards the victims and their faith were clearly meant to evoke a climate of fear and intimidation,” Jeffrey B. Veltri, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Miami field office, said in a statement. “Such conduct cannot be tolerated.”

Goldstein and attorneys for Harris did not respond to a request for comment.

(NewsNation) — Rapper Sean Kingston has been booked into Florida and faces criminal charges that allege he and his mother committed more than $1 million in fraud in an elaborate scheme the two ran together, records show.

Kingston, 34, and Janice Turner, 61, were arrested on May 23 in connection with the fraud charges after a raid on Kingston’s mansion outside of Fort Lauderdale. Turner was taken into custody, and Kingston — whose real name is Kisean Anderson — was arrested in California, where he had been performing at a military base.

The pair have been charged with operating an organized scheme to defraud, along with grand theft, identify theft and other offenses, according to booking records released Sunday when Kingston and Turner were booked into the Broward County Jail.

Warrants released by the department allege Kington and Turner stole $480,000 in jewelry, more than $200,000 from Bank of America, nearly $160,000 from an Escalade dealership and more than $100,000 from First Republic Bank. In addition, the two are alleged to have stolen $86,000 from a customized bed manufacturer.

Kingston is being held on $100,000 bond.

Kingston was arrested May 23 at Fort Irwin, an Army training installation in California, where he had been performing. Turner was arrested on the same date after SWAT team members and sheriff’s deputies raided her son’s mansion.

Kingston waived his right to fight extradition and agreed to turn himself over to Florida authorities. Prior to being arrested, the Jamaican-born musician posted on Instagram, “People love negative energy! I am good and so is my mother!… my lawyers are handling everything as we speak.”

In addition to the other charges, Kingston was also arrested for violating his probation. Court records show that Kingston was on probation for the trafficking of stolen merchandise.

The pair were scheduled to appear in court Monday.

Robert Rosenblatt, an attorney representing Kingston and his mother, previously told reporters that he looked forward to addressing the criminal charges and was confident that a successful resolution could be reached.

Kingston was also named in a lawsuit that alleges he entered into a contract to purchase a $150,000 entertainment system that included a 232-inch television. The complaint alleges that he used his fame to defraud his victims.

Kingston is best known for “Beautiful Girls,” which rose to No. 1 in 2007. He also collaborated with Justin Bieber on the song “Eenie Meane.” The lawsuit claims that Kingston said he had a current and working relationship with Bieber.

He allegedly promised that he and Bieber would appear in promotional videos in exchange for a lower down payment for the entertainment system.

(NewsNation) — NASA is warning that an early June planetary parade has been overhyped but said skywatchers can see a similar spectacle later in the month.

The parade of planets, featuring the alignment of Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, won’t actually be visible to most, the space agency said. Mercury and Jupiter will be at or below the horizon in early June, and Uranus and Neptune can only be seen with a telescope. That leaves just Mars and Saturn visible to the naked eye.

But those hoping to see a celestial pageant aren’t without hope.

Later in the month, on June 29, NASA says another alignment will be more visible. Saturn, the moon, Mars and Jupiter will be lined up in the early morning sky, all visible without a telescope.

To recognize planets, look for a light that shines steadily in the sky rather than twinkling like a star. If binoculars are used, planets will appear more like discs or crescents than points of light.

Moving objects, on the other hand, are more likely to be artificial, like planes or satellites. The International Space Station can also be seen at times, visible as a very bright light that may be seen moving slowly through its orbit.

For those hoping to catch the late June alignment, Saturn appears as a yellowish light, while Mars gives off a red or orange campfire-like glow, and Jupiter appears as a bright white light.

Other days of astronomical note in June include the new moon on June 6 and the full moon, also known as the strawberry moon, on June 21, which comes just one day after the summer solstice on June 20 when those in the northern hemisphere will experience the longest day of the year.
